As we light the first candle on the Advent Wreath this week, our Scripture lessons charge us to be on watch. As we look backwards and reflect on the gift of a Savior, we also look forward to His return.

Just as we start the church year with the promise and hope of the coming Savior, we end it with the promise of His return. Paul’s words this week’s Second Reading, Col 1:11-20, gives several descriptive names for Christ, like “the firstborn from the dead”. He has died. He is risen. He will come again. Hold fast to that promise this, and every, week.

As we approach the end of both the liturgical year and the calendar year, we may start to think about what the future may hold. And there will be hard times and challenges. But our loving God knows what we’re going through. He’s been there.

But here’s the thing. His love is in us, and under us, and through us all the time. Guaranteed. So no matter what may come, we can face it. That’s what all three of today’s readings tell us.

In this week’s readings we hear the stories of two men, both lepers, both foreigners, but both with great faith. Both were healed by that faith. God does answer faithful prayer, although not always in the way we ask.

In today’s Second Reading, the Apostle Paul tells his followers to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11). To pursue these today seems to go against everything society tells us we should be. How much more would the society of the Roman Empire, the society to which there words were written, have scorned such pursuits?

But we are different. We are God’s chosen children. We are each special to Him and to each other.
