Second Worship Service

In this week’s Second Reading, St Paul writes to the church in Thessalonica, “Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.” (1Thes 5:11).

We live in a world where tearing one another down is far more common than encouraging and building up. The term “dog eat dog” comes to mind.

But we’re not dogs. We all are God’s beloved children. Each one special. Each one with our own set of unique gifts. Each one to be loved, encouraged, and built up as St. Paul told us.

This week’s Gospel in Matthew includes the Beatitudes, a word meaning blessed from the Latin word “beati”. In these verses, Jesus identifies a group who most would consider unfortunate, and calls them blessed.

I wonder, who would Jesus identify in Beatitudes today?

In this week’s Gospel lesson Jesus avoided the trap set by the religious leaders of the day who asked whether it was lawful to pay taxes to the Roman emperor, a foreign invader. He responded to their question with one of his own, asking whose head and title were on the coin used to pay the tax. When they responded, “the emperor’s”, Jesus told them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matt 22:21-22).

What do you give to God?
