In this week’s Gospel lesson Jesus avoided the trap set by the religious leaders of the day who asked whether it was lawful to pay taxes to the Roman emperor, a foreign invader. He responded to their question with one of his own, asking whose head and title were on the coin used to pay the tax. When they responded, “the emperor’s”, Jesus told them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matt 22:21-22).
