It is the 4th Sunday in Advent, Sunday December 19th.

This week our young people (with some help from some young at heart bigger kids) will be presenting a Christmas program in place of the sermon at both services. This year’s program is entitled “It We Do It, It Will Work”. A big “Thank You!” to everyone involved in this year’s program.

Our Christmas Eve service on Friday, Dec. 24th will start with special music at 6:30, followed by our candlelight service at 7:00 pm. As did the shepherds and wise men so long ago, come, celebrate the miracle of Christmas.

As we light the third, rose colored Advent candle, we remember the joy of the shepherds as they heard the good news of the angels and went to look for the newborn Christ child. This week’s reading from Philippians captures the spirit of this week, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, Rejoice.” Perhaps you remember the musical round that makes use of that phrase? Is that you humming?

As we begin our Advent journey towards Christmas, we take heart in the words of Jesus in this week’s Gospel lesson, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Luke 21:33) The Word of God is eternal, just as His love for each of us is eternal. Come, Lord Jesus.

In today’s readings we hear, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. How amazing that the Creator God, who made all that has ever been, all that we see around us now, and all that will ever be, loves and cares for each one of us.

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus warns of terrible days to come, and yet ends with a note of hope. Did you see it in Mark 13:8? “This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.” For with birth comes new life. New hope.

Today is Reformation Day, Sunday October 31st. Not only is it the birthday of the Lutheran Church, this week we also have a young lady affirming her Baptism, our Chancel Choir is singing again for the first time in over a year, and we are resuming weekly communion at the altar rail. Praise God!
