In this week’s Reading from the book of Hebrews, we hear in verse 11, “Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.” We are all children of God. We are all brothers and sisters with Jesus. We are all family.

All of today’s lessons talk about communicating and dealing with others, whether Moses and the people of Israel, or James talking to his community of faith, or Jesus talking to John and the rest of his disciples. So today’s communication problems between people aren’t new to God. Listen for His voice. Hear His words of hope.

In today’s readings, we see Jesus fulfill the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah, “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.”

Our eyes and ears too often are closed to God’s love and grace. Let us all pray for guidance in navigating this confusing world.

The apostle Peter was capable, like many of us, of both moments of complete clarity and moments of total blindness. In today’s Gospel lesson we hear one of those sudden bursts of insight from Peter. When Jesus asked the disciples “Do you wish to go away?”, Peter responded, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Sometimes the simplest of responses can hold the key to the most amazing of gifts.
