In this week’s Gospel lesson, Jesus tells his followers, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34).

He knew what was coming. He knew he would have to face death on a cross.

And yet he did it. For us!

As we start our Lenten journey this week, we read the words of the St. Peter in today’s second reading, “Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God.” (1 Peter 3:18).

Follow Christ. Find God. It’s as simple, and as difficult, as that.

Today is Scout Sunday, when we are led in worship by members of the Scouting Community. It is also the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany.

We will have a single, combined worship service this week, beginning at 10:00 AM. If you are able to attend in person, remember that the Scouts will be serving breakfast preceding the service, beginning at 9:00 AM. This will be a time of good food and good fellowship.

In this week’s First Reading from Isaiah, we hear the stirring words reminding us that God is everlasting and gives strength to even the faintest of heart. “But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31).

Wait for the Lord. It’s worth the wait.

This week’s gospel contains the Jesus’ admonition to his new disciples to “Follow me and I will make you fish for people” (Mark 1:17).

I’m afraid around here this week it would have to be ice fishing. Stay safe, everyone. Pray for those with inadequate shelter from the cold and help however and wherever you can.

Second Worship Service

This week, as we celebrate the Jesus’ Baptism, we think of our own. Whether that happened as an infant, child, adolescent, or adult the message is the same. God chose us to be his beloved children. We are loved! What a great message to start out the new year!
